The first entry: 5-13-2002

Welcome to the first installment of the first Alltooflat blog: AlltooFirst-apartment-in-brooklyn. Or something like that. There was actually a little debate as to what to title this little section of ATF. Ton mentioned that it would be just like a text version of Sex in the City. However, the way I figure it, it's far more like Celibacy in the City. Ben thought Science in the City would be the way to go, since I'm a big nerd. But I don't do much science at the apartment. So as for right now, this section is remaining nameless. Have a suggestion? Email me.

So, this is supposed to be some sort of regularly-updated feature on ATF, about my new apartment. I don't know if it's going to be funny, or depressing, or if it'll include my decorating tips or what; everything is very unclear at this point. I suppose there's a possibility that this isn't going to last more than a few installments. But I figure by then, Ben and Ton will be staying in the apartment and will be able to update it with their own experiences. Figure what it'll mostly be is me expressing amazement at all of the things I'll have to deal with moving from what's basically been a sheltered upper-middle class suburban life to living in a low-income section of the biggest, baddest city in the world.

We should take it from the top. I just moved into a place in Bushwick, Brooklyn. For those of you who don't know the area, I think the closest thing I can use as a pop culture reference is the area that Joe Pesci is forced to move into in The Super. Visually speaking, I mean. It's definitely not the greatest neighborhood in Brooklyn: one of my housemates (Jeff) told me that his car had it's windows broken on two separate occasions outside the apartment in the first couple of months after he moved in. Last Monday, a new car appeared in the street in front of the apartment building. It had been chopped - The engine and hood were missing, the seats ripped out, etc. It made me laugh, though I suppose it's not really so funny when you think about it. Eh, what are you gonna do?

I feel pretty comfortable walking around, though. Don't feel like I'm going to get jumped or anything. I came home late-ish Thursday night after going to a princess superstar show in manhattan. I didn't feel like I was in any danger. My apartment is only two blocks away from a stop on the L train, so it's only a short distance I'm above ground in the urban jungle I call my neighborhood.

I'm psyched because tonight is the first night I'm going to be cooking a real dinner in my new place. Not that I'll really be cooking a real dinner - I'll really just be heating up some pre-made lasagna in the oven. But it'll be the first time I'm turning the oven on, which comes up pretty huge. Come over if you want some.

Alright, I think that's enough for the first installment. It's not like I don't have things to do at work. Errrr.... Anyway. Come back tommorrow or the next day, and check this out for updates. Eventually I'll have some pictures put up here along with the drivel that I call text, but don't expect that anytime full. Oh, and since this is a good enough venue as any - If you're looking for or know anyone who's looking for a spot in a three bedroom loft in Bushwick, give kennyb an email.
