Ask the Fish - 05/2/2002
In an attempt to increase the frequency of updates to the site, we are adding yet another freaking blog. I don't know why we think this will increase the frequency of updates to site - we have at least three of the things anyway, and they are updated just about as often as Boston wins the World Series. But we try. Ask The Fish will now be done blog style, with new entries getting posted as soon as they are answered. Expect the same quality of advice that you have come to expect (from what is either a 800 lb halibut with a highly defined sense of irony, or one of four uber-geeks with nothing better to do on a Saturday night).

    Dear Ask the Fish,
Hey I want to go to a cool club in Washington DC. Good music, hot chicks, cheap drinks. Does such a utopia exist?
    -DC Clubface

    Dear DC,
The following clubs in Washington DC should have equal representation of gender and affordable beverages. To reiterate our position from last week, ATF does not pass judgement on music quality (other than bit rate).

  • Washington Area Frisbee Club
  • Washington Area Butterfly Club
  • Mazda Sports Car Club of Washington
  • Sailing Club of Washington
  • The Triangle Club
  • Appalachian Mountain Club Washington
    Hope that helps!

    Dear Ask the Fish,
I don't get it. I followed the link on the front page that sent me to a google search for "Geeky Wallpaper." But the first page that was listed was the front page of the site! So, which came first, the link to the web search on the front page of alltooflat or the google page pointing to it?
I feel like I'm trying to find the beginning of an Ouroboros!
    -Konfused in Kalamazoo

    Dear Konfused,
Great question! You have just demonstrated a perfect example of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, (which was discovered by some guy name Fritz). The Uncertainty Principle states that we can't know both a particle's velocity and position. In order to determine its position, one would need to observe it. The act of observing a particle (light bouncing off of it) will instantly change its velocity, so we won't be able to determine both.
Similarly, by posting the fact that we are the number one Google link for "geeky wallpaper" on our homepage, we instantly create a new page with a higher page rank and the same search terms! We can't make the observation (that is to say, post it on our website) and have the original fact come true!
Stay tuned next month for our exciting comendium "Physics According to All Too Flat!" (wouldn't that be amazing?!)

    Dear Ask the Fish,
If each of you had to liken yourself to a Star Wars character, who would you be?
    -George Lucas

    Dear George,
Obi-Wan "Ben" Kenobi, KennyBobaFett, and Ton-buck Toora.
If you're really into this sort of thing, and have a lot of free time, you can find out the actual answer to this question by taking the Find Your Star Wars Twin Personality Test. Unfortunately, we have better things to do with our time.

    Dear Ask the Fish,
Can you explain Rayleigh scattering to me? Is it different than other types of scattering?
    -Photon Heading For A Cloud

    Dear Photon,
Rayleigh scattering refers to the scattering of light off of the molecules of the air. Rayleigh scattering is more effective at short wavelengths (the blue end of the visible spectrum). Therefore the light scattered down to the earth at a large angle with respect to the direction of the sun's light is predominantly in the blue end of the spectrum.
Mie scattering is closely related, but it not wavelength dependent. Other famous types of partical scattering include Brillouin Scattering and Bragg Scattering, which can take place in solids. Raman and Compton Scattering are also well known scattering effects. This question has inspired us to make a Scattering Trading Card. (Coming Soon!)

    Dear Ask the Fish,
What is that little eyeball-and-do-not-enter-sign symbol on the bottom-left of my IE 6 Status Bar, that shows up whenever I'm visiting alltooflat? It's in the middle of three square boxes to the left of the box that says Internet. I've never seen it before! And now it's all over alltooflat! I'll email you a screenshot if you don't believe me.

    -An Internet Explorer

    Dear An,
According to Microsoft's IE6 Privacy Policy, "When you are surfing the Web in Internet Explorer 6, the privacy icon may appear on your status bar. Dear Ask the Fish,
What are the advantages a 64-bit processor? I mean, when exactly are we ever going to use the number 2^64-1?

    Dear Chip,
Clearly you've never played Super SMASH Brothers Melee...

    Dear Ask the Fish,
You were dead wrong about the song. I mean those lyrics extractions are no where to be found in the song you told me it was, how could u even think it was that song?
    -Damen Trent

    Dear Damen,
(Note: this question was in reference to last week's Ask the Fish where we told Damen that the words "breathe in heaven" could be found in the "new techno remix of Bring Us To Heaven")
Well Damen, the obvious confusion came because the words to Bring Us To Heaven are:
    Bring us to Heaven now
We want to breathe your fresh air
    We want to breathe
    what you breathe in Heaven

Looks like a match to me!
