NORTH BELLMORE, NY - A decade-long love affair with conspiracy theories in which the United States government was viewed as complicit in or directly responsible for a panoply of real and imagined misdeeds from Operation Tailwind to Oklahoma City to the Jonestown Massacre came to an end this week, as writer/editor Tom Shaughnessy realized that he no longer found
Disinformation.com entertaining or informative.
"I used to love that website, man," said Shaughnessy, 25, referring to the popular counterculture news clearinghouse. "They explained everything from how the CIA brainwashed Mark David Chapman into assassinating John Lennon to how every war in history was fought for oil or natural gas reserves. Then 9/11 happened, and now I'm like, you know what? The Washington Post does a fine job, thank you very much.
"It's not that I don't think the government is full of shit anymore," Shaughnessy concluded, "it's just that it's become abundantly clear to anyone who's really looking that Iran, Iraq, Syria, the Taliban, Saudi Arabia, the Palestinian Authority, North Korea, China, Cuba, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Libya, Sudan, Russia, France, Germany, the UN and the EU are even fuller of it."
