Revolting Iraqis Make Man Really Appreciate Sid Meier's Civilization
    5-1-2003 (Archived)
After recent revolts by Iraqi citizens against the U.S. forces that ravaged and overthrew their city, 19 year old Jake Randisi has really started appreciating Sid Meier's popular Civilization series.

"You know," explained Randisi, "the original Civ was an amazing game. After you overthrew another civilization, you always had to leave troops behind to squash revolts. I didn't realize at the time that that is just like real life! I never quite appreciated how realistic Civilization actually is. I mean, take a look at Iraq: we had to leave troops there to squash the rebellions, just like in the game! It's amazing. Thank goodness we've already developed metalurgy and gunpowder. I couldn't imagine trying to stop Iraq's WMDs with a bunch of Pikemen and some Longbowmen.

"But you know what?" Randisi added. "If this was really like Civilization, or even Civ II or Civ III, the US would have won the Space Race ending, and we wouldn't have even gotten this far in history!"

When reminded that the USSR actually beat the US into space, Randisi looked puzzled and resumed playing Empire Earth Gold.
