Active Wear Purchased by Inactive Woman
    12-11-2002 (Archived)
WESTBURY, NY - Local shopper Allison Fernwood, 29, spent close to sixty dollars on sweatpants and sweatshirts today, despite the knowledge that at no time in the forseeable future would she actually sweat while wearing them.

"I'd just left the Cheesecake Factory when I noticed the Old Navy a couple of stores down in the [Fortunoff's The Source] Mall," said Fernwood, while waiting on line at Auntie Anne's Pretzels. "I saw all those comfy Performance Fleece clothes and decided right then and there to buy them." Exactly what task Fernwood felt she would "perform" in the Performance Fleece clothing was unclear.

Previous shopping expeditions have seen the staunchly non-athletic Fernwood purchase ostensibly athletic clothing such as a track suit, cross-trainer sneakers, and bicycle shorts. Controversy over the issue briefly erupted when Fernwood's longtime boyfriend, Gary Sobczak, 31, questioned her need for a tennis bracelet. He quickly retracted the statement.

ATFact staffer Amanda Collins contributed to this report.
