I'm sleepy. And I'll tell you why. It's just a week jam-packed with excitement up in this (metaphorical) house. Apartment viewings, concerts, parties. . . damn, it's like I'm living the new york high society life, just without the money, glamour, and cinematic sex scenes with the Hilton sisters (although you can rest assured that this is not from lack of trying). I realized that I've reached a point where I would need my PDA to keep my appointments even if I didn't have the memory of a chronically stoned goldfish (I know - wah. But still, you're looking at someone who's idea of a big night out usually just involves going out to the video store to get a movie instead of sitting by my computer and downloading one).
I've been hitting a lot of shows lately, which is super, since even when they suck, it's always nice going to the venues. This past weekend, it was the
Siren festival, down at Coney Island. I've been spending a surprising amount of time at Coney Island this summer (I'm surprised, anyway). My friend, Allison (whom you will recall as the funniest girl ever from such blog entries as
Right In The Kisser and such Alltooflat adventures as
the penny myth), is also the coolest girl ever. As proof, please reference the Wednesday edition of the New York Metro newspaper (two weeks ago, I believe), wherein there is a full page article about her and her life as a knife-throwers assisstant (see the
photo layout of her and the Amazing Throwdini, a knife-thrower and a gentleman. And I don't just say that because he regurarly throws knives around someone I love). Anyway, because of this job of Ally's, she spends a lot of time down at the Coney Island Side Show. And because I spend a lot of time with Ally, I too spend some time at the side show. Say what you will, but side show folk are good folk. Salt of the earth. If earth were salted with people who eat bugs, walk on swords, eat fire, and electrocute themselves to such an extent that they can light a torch with their tounge. Which, evidentally, Allison has done a couple of times as well. Honestly, she might be my favorite person in the whole world.
Right, but the show. Honestly, didn't get to see much of it, because I was hanging out at the side show with Ally and Eek the Geek (the man who tattooed his face with space!). Ran into a few people whom I had met at a party the Friday before, which was nice, and another fellow who was a friend of
Dave from school. Saw a bit of TV on the Radio (whom the kids love) and someone who I think was Electric 6, but may not have been since there were only three of them. Maybe four. Also found a Galaga machine that had a quarter in it, so I only had to pay a quarter to play a game (which I did, and got to level 4 on one life, until Ally told me I'd be there all day if she let me. She was probably right. But I hate those Galagas so much. Damn dirty aliens.
Tuesday night was Elefant, at the Bowery. It was an all-ages show, which resulted in two problems. The first was me accidentally ogling girls that were far too young for me (maybe 'accidentally' is a misrepresentation, but give me some license here). The second was that, since it was an all-ages show, I guess the sound guys decided they could call it in. There was feedback throughout all the bands that were playing that night - the sound was just horrible. Elefant kind of rocked, though. Although I guess they didn't realize that playing a show to NYC hipsters, who are all just too cool for school, means that no one is going to dance. It's disappointing to everyone involved, but what are you gonna do? I guess they're all concerned that their vintage Urban Outfitters shirts are going to get sweat-stained if their velocity increases to more than a few inches per second. There was a lot of head-nodding, though, which is the appropriate manner in which to show your support and/or appreciation for a musical group. So that was nice.
Last night was Transmetropolitan at Lincoln Center - Alice Tully Hall. Won't say too much about this, except that it was pretty durned funny to see
Electic Method do a 20 minute audio/video mash (including cuts from Missy Elliot, Outkast, and that chick that does the "My Milkshake brings all the boys to the yard" song for a Lincoln Center audience. Oh, and also there were two points in the night where there was huge amounts of applause for anti-Bush statements (which, I feel it appropriate to mention, were reasonably and politely delivered, without any venom or hatred. Which was a nice change for that sort of thing). Now, regardless of how you feel about our POTUS, I kind of feel like coming to NYC and making those sorts of statements is cheating. It's cheap applause, and easy to get. Kind of like going to a Raffi show and yelling out "Who here likes ice cream!"
Tonight, it's more apartment viewings (which I should really talk about one of these days. It's funny to go apartment hunting in NYC with Ben. Especially when he decides that a bedroom we are considering is too small for him. He, quite literally, used to live in a closet in college (it was a nice closet, admittedly, but when all was said and done, it was a closet). I think they wanted $1600 just for the for the
closetbedroom (it was a sublet). But there was a fee, so we weren't really considering it. Did I mention we want to move to Manhattan? Woof.
