My Shorts: 7-26-2004

Todays entry: a collection of shorts.

I was thinking about that most reknowned of philosophical questions: the "What if our universe is just an atom in the structure of some other, greater universe?" and the invariable infinite regression that proceeds direct therefrom: "And why should not that greater universe be only a component part of some other, even vaster universe?" And I realized that, indeed, intellectually it is possible to posit that going on infinitely. However, I decided that there is a practical event horizon to that sort of discussion. I believe that going out three iterations is as far as a person can go without sounding like an idiot.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I love the internet. I was sitting here, reading through the website of a feller I think is really funny (665, by a guy named Jeff Power - this is the guy who turned me onto Kaiju Big Battel, so god bless him for that), and one of his entries mentions how hot the is singer for the band Mistle Thrush. I remember that a friend of mine (who's musical tastes I respect far more in retrospect than I did at the time) used to dig Mistle Thrush, and decided to check out their website to listen to a track or two to see if I wanted to buy an album. And by golly if they didn't have TWO of their older albums available for download. How awesome is that? Of course, the last hour orso I've been listening to it, I've been saying to myself "Eh." But still, at least, everyone is happy now. Except, potentially, Mistle Thrush. But they are (arguably) a goth band, which is, musically speaking, just about as close to being nihilism without being a german techno band composed of porn stars and 90's funk/punk band members.

This whole thing with the TV shows being put to DVD at the drop of a hat is beginning to be something of a problem for me. It all started with Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Sealab 2021. I thought to myself "It's not that bad. I just have a couple." And then it was the entire first season of Aqua Teen, and two full seasons of Sealab from TiVo and other digital captures. And now someone has giving me season upon season of Futurama. I remember the days of yore when I would watch hours of Law and Order in my room - those days were positively halcyon compared to now. At least then, I was leaving my room to hang out in the living room. This weekend, I told everyone I knew that I was going upstate. Instead, I stayed in the apartment and watched cartoons on my computer. I don't think I left the house on Saturday, and today when I went to the park, I couldn't deal with it, and had to call Ben. The conversation went like this:

Ben: Huge! Where are you? Long Island?
Ken: Bryant Park - look, you doing anything?
Ben: Ummmm . . . not as such.
Ken: Good. Come to the park and do some work with me. And bring me a laptop.

All of that is true.

Saw today that Lance Armstrong became the first man ever to win the Tour de France 6 times (and he did so without taking a year off in the middle). Good for him - seriously now, Lance Armstrong is an American sports hero the likes of which we haven't seen since a young Joe DiMaggio. It's so huge that the Tour de France is totally an American race these days. Also, that Lance bikes for the US Postal Service team. I don't even know what that means, but it's really funny. Does he have to deliver mail in the off-season? Is that how he trains? That's a commercial just waiting to be made. Hey - Nike: Where's my check?

Someone uploaded David Sedaris 'Live At Carnegie Hall' to my computer. It's pretty much just him doing some readings. It's kind of depressing. Not in that the content is emotionally shifting (although, at times, it is). It's depressing because I don't think I'm ever going to be that funny. Admittedly, it sounds like he has a lot of raw material to work with, but it's a poor workman who blames his tools.
