Huh. Well, here's the thing. Remember in my
last post when I was all "for the 100th kennyblog entry I'm going to to a 'best of' kennyblog"? After a months worth of reading through the archives, I realized that I have yet to say anything worth repeating. It took me a while to get to that realization, and I wanted to apologize for making you wait (especially since it's probably a conclusion you have all made some time ago). So that idea is pretty much dead in the water. In lieu of rehashing old (stale, uninteresting) memories, I'll do my best at making some new (fresh, uninteresting) ones.
Probably the most important thing that's happened to me in the past while is my graduation from the training class at my new job. An end to 10 grueling weeks of writing code and sitting in lectures, and an emergence into a career of... well, writing code and attending meetings. But at least the hours will be shorter at the job itself. Which, by the way, I really dig - this past week (my first of actual work) was great. I did some good work on actual portions of our product. I can justifiably say that I have added value to our software, and that, for some strange reason, is just plain satisfying. Which in and of itself was strange and exciting, since from what I hear from friends is that job satisfaction is pretty hard to come by.
The lifestyle changes that have resulted in my leaving the training class are pretty exciting as well. I woke up yesterday morning (Saturday), and realized that there was
no reason whatsoever for me to go into the office. Honestly, I had no idea what to do with myself. I woke early in the morning, and kind of walked back and forth from the kitchen to my bedroom, over and over. Which was kind of creepy, I'll admit, since I was at it for almost an hour. I finally decided that what I really needed to do to make myself feel better was to work on a computer somewhere. So I took my laptop, and went to Bryant Park so I could login to my computer at home and do some work on it. I suppose it would have been a little less problematic just to sit at my computer at home and do the work there, but I decided against that for two reasons: it wouldn't have involved free wireless, and it wouldn't involve a commute (for which, by the time 1PM rolled around [which was a little while after noon], I was really pining).
There's always a big basket of fresh bananas in my office, for the programmers. Always. It's a little strange. I mean, it's obviously the best thing ever to have your employer supply fresh fruit. But I'm made a little uncomfortable by the fact that it's always bananas. Makes me think that my business cards, when I order them from the company, will have as my title read as "Code Monkey." I'm not sure if I'd be upset about that or not.
Really, I'm something of a new man these days. New lease on life, and all. Making a lot of changes in the ole life, things looking up, etc etc. Bought a new nipple ring, and put it in myself (which was really nerve wracking, since the last time anything went into that nipple was the most painful 15 minutes in a lifetime of doing stupid and painful things to my body). Got a new haircut, and that's always going to make you look at the world a little differently. I decided to take it all down. Well, my hairdresser decided. I went into a real live hair salon (which marked the first time I had my hair cut by someone who wasn't bald Italian male over 60 since the time I was 10 and I let my brother see if the Flowbee he made out of a vacuum and a weedwhacker worked [it didn't]), and asked the woman what she thought I should do with my hair. I was a little uncomfortable when she laughed at me, but it turned out alright (if a little drastic. My hair now involves significantly less hair than it did at the beginning of the week. But it's for the best - there's nothing to comb over, so I can't make any poor decisions re: the hair). Honestly, I think I look pretty tough. But then I think I look a little tough because of what I'm wearing now. Which is the next thing I wanted to discuss.
See, I'm a little worried about myself. A few weeks ago, I was walking through H&M (best clothing store ever) alone looking for clothes (worst idea ever - I should not be doing this without supervision) and ended up going home with a sweater vest. Which is bad enough, but bad came to worse when I wore it out to a bar. Without a shirt underneath. It was pretty absurd. I got into the bar alright, but after I had a couple, I had to go outside to make a phone call. When trying to re-enter the bar, the bouncer stopped me. The conversation went something like this:
Bouncer: I'm afraid I can't let you in with that shirt on.
Kennyb: Oh! Ummm... Is there some sort of dress code.
Bouncer: No. I just don't feel like I can let you into this bar wearing that shirt.
Kennyb: You know, I'm glad you said something. I really agonized over putting this on when I left the house tonight. I have something in my bag inside I can change into.
[Bouncer looks at me like I'm an idiot]
Kennyb: Right. Thanks then.
So there was that. Which in and of itself was just an amusing interlude. But I've also been baking on the weekends. I've set aside Sunday as a day for hanging out in the apartment, and making cookies. I've done oatmeal cookies (which multiple sources told me were a little salty, but good. Which I didn't understand, but there you are), brownies (from scratch - unsweetened bakers chocolate and all. And by the way - to whomever told me that you can make bakers chocolate taste good by adding a little salt to it and then putting it into your mouth - Go to Hell), and today it was Chocolate Chocolate Chip cookies. And while I was baking, I watched My Big Fat Greek Wedding and wore (and am still wearing) a muscle shirt whose bottom I had cut off (it looks very Muscle Beach. That's the really queer part of Florida, right? It looks pretty queer, is my point).
What I'm trying to say is that I've pretty much given up any standing I have to make fun of Sam for watching Felicity. Which is a downer, since that's a high point of my week.
