Azazoth, for instance: 10-1-2003

Today was a good day. I woke up this morning at a reasonable hour, took a leisurely shower and made myself some lunch with a hero roll I had bought on Sunday (what exactly is it about Sunday that makes it the day for buying bread? I don't think I've ever bought any yeast product on any day but the Christian Sabbath [not even bagels]. What, bakers are so tied to the baker stereotype that they can't plan their day around the schedule of their customers? Bad business, if you ask me), went to work. Which is something forward towards which I still look.

But it wasn't so much the events of the day that made it worth mentioning. It was the thing itself. The sky was clear when I walked out of my apartment this morning, and the air was almost brisk - as if fall was a polite but frustrated guy at a bar who's trying to get up the courage to tap summer on the shoulder and ask if maybe it hasn't been standing at the jukebox for quite some time now? I could smell fall in air, and it smelled good.

I dig the changing of the seasons - reminds me that the world is a living thing. And today was the day I noticed that it was happening again. It's a nearly tangible (and definitely measureable) point of inflection on a temperature curve. I mean, yeah, it had been getting a little cooler day by day, but the rate of acceleration just did something back from which it it cannot turn. And it's coming at a good time for me also (not that I had all that much input into the question), since (as I'm sure you'll remember from my last entry) I'm in something of a transitory period myself.

I've got to spend the rest of the night re-arranging my drawers so that the sweaters and long johns are easily accessible. This might actually be the best part of the fall, actually, since it's so closely tied to the first occasion of the cold season where I get to wear my bright red union suit out of the house. I wonder where it'll be this year? I better find something soon, since there's a good chance if I don't find something by mid-November, it's going to be the office, and I don't think anyone wants that. I mean, they've got a butt flap.

Another good thing about the fall is that we don't have to feel bad about doing the indoor things we wanted to do all summer long but felt bad about indulging. If you're me, you're reading comic books and spending almost as much time on the computer at home as you do at the office (alright, alright. That's not much of a change from the summer, but humor me). Maybe you're going to be getting more reading done, or you're determined to plumb the depths of HBO On Demand (they have how many episodes of Sex and the City? Good Lord it's like I've died and gone to Heaven if Heaven was run by an idiot god!)1.

My housemate is heralding the falling of the leaves by getting in some video gaming. Which I totally support - it gets me away from the television (a device I feel is not unlike a wasting social disease, in some of the same ways as syphillis, or socialism), makes him happy, keeps someone in the house who might eat my baked goods. But I think the reason it's so important to me is that it makes me feel better about myself. Not like I feel superior to Sam because he's wasting his time with video games and aren't I so much better than that. Don't be ridiculous. I feel better about myself because I was already going to be wasting my time by sitting in my room reading comic books and contemplating a nap before bedtime. It's a "self-debasement loves company" kind of thing, really. Oh - Tiger Woods Golf, and Grand Turismo 3, in case you were wondering (which is also huge, since those are probably two of the most boring games imaginable for spectating. Were he playing Final Fantasy VII Monday night, you might not be reading this blog entry).

Alright, that was unfair of me. I've actually spent a fair amount of time watching episodes of Sex and the City, and I've enjoyed a number of them. But then I once referred to Slugs ("They ooze. They slime. They kill") as a "horror masterpiece, so clearly I am a complete fucking imbicile
