All Here In Full Color: 5-5-2003
Like I'd said, I went to see X-men 2 on Friday night. Afterward, I went to a party where a few people asked what I thought about it. I felt no compunction whatsoever telling them that I just plain loved it. Thinking about it a little more, though, I realized that's not saying very much. Asking me what I feel about the latest movie port of a comic book is not unlike asking a junkie how they feel about heroin. Unless it's some pretty bad smack (to extend the analogy, read that as "Daredevil"), the junkie is going to like it (honestly, I probably liked Daredevil considerably more than a junkie likes bad horse. So I'm even less discerning than that).
But even given that I'm a sucker for cinematizations of comic books [ed - is that a word? Be quiet, I'm working here], X-men 2 was really good. First of all, had a showing of the Matrix trailer, the first time I saw it on the big screen, which was almost worth the price of admission (would have been, too, if I hadn't watched it 15 times already on various computers (at one point watching it on three different laptops all at the same time)). The movie did a great job of keeping on track with a storyline that can be followed by a general audience, while still throwing a lot (and I mean a lot) of references from the comic books. But in a subtle manner, so they were almost like messages written in ultraviolet light, for the chickens that are fanboys.
Hmmm... That didn't come out as lyrically as I had wanted it to.
The showing I went to (6:15 on a Friday afternoon) also had a great audience. There were definitely a number of scenes that caused us to burst into applause. The Matrix trailer was one of them (which was almost obligatory), but the one that made me happiest was the noise level that was generated when Wolverine made his first kill. It was beautiful. In kind of a sick way, but that's how I like my beauty.
Last night, I came home after a long day of... going out to a lounge bar with some old friends of mine. Not so long a day at that. But anyway, I came home to Sam telling me that he ended up getting Grand Theft Auto 3. I can't decide if this is a big problem, or not such a big problem. I made a decision that I'm only going to watch him play (this is a decision that has worked in the past, with such roommates as Ben Stein and Antoni Chan, and such video games as Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask), but I don't know that it's going to work so well with this game. I have a lot less homework to get done these days. I do want to mention about the game that it definitely lives up to all the hype. From the radio stations to the beating people with a bat for no reason other than that they looked at you funny, it's all there in full color. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but I'm leaving work right now to go home and wait for Sam to start playing.
