Weekend news: 6-17-2002

I know I start a lot of these blog entries with the word "Woof," and I do apologize for that. But not for anything: Woof.

I guess this has been a pretty crazy weenend for apartment news. In fact, one of the reasons that there hasn't been a blog update for almost a week is because everything has been so crazy. I'll recap:

So, I finally decided that Jeff is a little too much of a sketchball for me to take over his lease come the beginning of August (as I mentioned earlier). So that's all well and good, and I've been looking at some apartments since that decision has been made (including one very nice apartment in Greenpoint, which may or may not be too far away from the subway to sign for.) Fine. I go back to Bushwick Tuesday after work, and I find a note has been slipped under my door. It was an envelope addressed to Jeff from Carnegie Management Inc (the landlords organization).

And before you start telling me about mail tampering being a federal crime: it wasn't mail. No stamp, no seal, no foul. And anyway, Jeff hasn't even been in the apartment since the previous weekend, and I had had no idea where he was. So yeah, I looked at it. And it's a good thing I did, otherwise this would have been a far less interesting entry. Because the letter inside the envelope informed Jeff (well, me by proxy) that the rent for June (due on the first of the month) had not been paid, and that if it (+ a late fee of $167) was not paid in 5 days, the lease would be considered broken and Jeff would have no legal rights to the apartment. Kind of a disaster, no? I'm reminded of the Direct TV bill, except WAY more important.

So I called Jeff and left a voicemail telling him the contents of the letter (on Wednesday). And got no response for a few days, so I tried again yesterday. Nothing. So I was getting a little concerned, thinking of things like "eviction" and "lock-out." I do have some nice stuff that I'd like to hold onto. You know, like EVERYTHING I OWN. I called my bank to check the status of the check I drafted for him for the month of June, and found that it had not been cashed yet. So I put a stop on it (the way I figured it, come Monday he had no legal right to sublet the place, so why should I keep my check valid? I'll admit to being somewhat concerned that he was going to pull a Jorge and skip town)

In any case, I wake up this morning to the sound of Jeff banging around the kitchen. I take a shower, and when I get out and dressed, he and I have a talk. This morning he told me that the whole "eviction" thing has been taken care of already, and why did I cancel that check? So then he asks me to write another check, and if I could, fill it out to Carnegie Management. What I want to know, is if the whole payment thing had been taken care of, why does he want my check filled out to the landlord? Sketchy.

So my plan is still to move out at the beginning of July. Definitely hope that I don't have to deal with staying there another month, since with Jeff moving at the end of June, I have a funny feeling the likelihood of me getting my security back decreases a fair amount.

In other news, I think I'm going to Antigua for a week in July, Jamaica for Thanksgiving, and Delaware for a weekend in August. Huge, huge, and huge.
