I think I've discussed before in this space how much I really really love sandwiches from the Wegmans supermarkets. I'm not alone in this feeling - my jackass friends (Ben, I'm looking in your direction. Which is convenient, since Ton is standing quite close to you) have a similar desire to eat those tasty tasty treats. There's a tacit, but well-understood, agreement that whenever one of us gets within some reasonable travel distance of a Wegmans, it's expected that they do anything in their power to make it inside and buy some subs for the rest of us.

Recently, I was on a recruiting trip to Cornell University, for my company. Always a good time - I like talking to students, I enjoy interviewing (when I'm the one asking the questions, at least), and I get to visit lovely places (the last one, for instance, was the Rochester Radisson. Good times. I and one of my colleagues flew up, and two others drove up. Given that we were flying into Ithaca airport, there was definitely even odds on the drivers getting there before us the flyers, but as it turned out, the flyers got there first. And so I did what any self-respecting college alumnus would do - got in a taxi, and had them take me to the supermarket.

Had a nice little talk with the girl at the counter while she was making my three subs, and the two subs that my colleague got. After wards, we got a call from the guys who were driving up. The conversation was uncomfortable, but the meet-up afterwards was pretty funny.

Us: So, we got to Ithaca a couple of hours ago. Went downtown to head to Wegmans to get some subs for lunch tommorrow.

Them: You went and got everyone subs for lunch! That's great, thanks!

Us: Ummm.... actually, yeah not so much. We just got subs for ourselves.

Them: Oh. OK. Well, we'll see you in a little while.

Some time passes, and we take a cab back to the hotel, where the two guys who drove up are waiting in the lobby. The note, with surprised smiles, that between the two of us, we were carrying five subs.

Them: Oh my god! After we had that conversation, you guys went back in and got subs for the rest of us? That's awesome!

Us: Ummmm, actually no. These are for us to take back to new york. Sorry.


I laughed a lot.
