I believe that places are resonant. They have borders, and these borders contain and hold the memories of all the thincogs that have occured within, and this memory lasts a long time. I'm sure you've walked into a place that you know and love, and had a feeling fill you of warmth and safety. It's also possible to walk into an unfamiliar room, a house, forest clearing, and know that it is a good place, a loved place. You always hear of poeple talking of certain places which can "give you the creeps" (although this may just be me harkening back to my days where I would watch Scooby-Doo for hours at a time). I think these feelings are just people picking up on the natural resonance of some space: The things which occur in a place seep into the ground, can be felt, and can affect the things that go on in that place.
Re-reading that, I realize that I might be coming off a little like a hippy. So I won't belabor the point. But all I'm saying is that I think it's true.
There are a lot of funny people in my life. At some point or another, a good portion (not all, by any stretch of the imagination, but enough to make it noteworthy) lived in a co-operative living house in Ithaca, NY. It was one of those places I was just talking about. There have been a bunch of really really funny people that have lived in that place over the years. And so the house itself embodies funny, and attracts funny people, who in turn do funny things, thereby increasing the funny energy of the residence, and so on ad infinitum. Honestly, I expect that one day, the place will annihilate itself in an catastophic release of positive psychic energy so great that the whole of Tompkins Country will go for two months unable to stop themselves from chuckling without provocation. My point, is funny people.
I was just chatting with one of those people on the phone (Ton, whom we all know and love), who was just visiting another two of those people (Kennyf and Kate, whom we all know and love under their
nom du flat, the
original Dogfish. They are both really funny people. Married people, too (which to me makes them just a little funnier, but that's neither here nor there). I suppose I hadn't been listening any of the times I've talked with Kate, because I always that that she was studying plants and soil. Part of that might be because I know she used to live in the BioDome (for what reason I never really understood. The extent of my knowledge of the BioDome suite of projects is that I'm pretty positive they have something to do with Pauly Shore). Another part might be that I just automatically assume that the significant other of any given friend of mine studies plants (it's just one of those quirks). But, as it turns out, Kate is doing graduate studies in Geology. As is Kennyf. And they are both in the same fantasy basketball league. Really, I'm incredibly jealous of their relationship. Their dinner coversations have to be the funniest things on the planet. This is how I imagine they sound:
Kf : Oh my god! Were you watching that Pistons game last night? And that block by Wallace? He was wearing the fro!
Kate: Not only was I watching the game, but I was sitting next to you at the time. Remember, I laughed at you and told you that was going to give me the lead in blocks, taking a point away from you leaving you barely edging out Kennyb for second-to-last? You were drinking my milk!
Kf :
(dreamily) Oh yeah. Hey - wanna talk about granite? Or more basketball? I love you. And rocks, but mostly you. And MJ.
Kate tugs Kennyf's beard. End scene.
That's just an artistic rendering of course. The actuality probably has more talk about their computers (her's is SO much faster than his). But the fact remains.
Sorry there hasn't been more apartment-related stuff. But it's been pretty quiet around here. What with Sam on another continent, and me not spending much time here except to sleep (and watch Law and Order), things haven't been that exciting. Nothing I can talk about outside of personal confidence, of course. I did have a brief moment of panic on Friday night, when I thought Sam was coming home and I hadn't cleaned up the place yet. Actually, thinking about it, cleaning up the place is exactly the opposite of what I needed to do before he got back. I did clean up the place, the hour after he left, by putting all of the stuff Sam was keeping in the living room into his room. Things like his mail, his candy (we have a sufficient enough volume of Starburst to form a 1:4 scale model the Niņa. Oddly enough, we were two packages short to make a similar one of the Santa Maria, which is the project on which I originally embarked. That was disappointing). Also his deckchairs. And his bar-be-que. It was really nice to clear out the living room for a bit, but that stuff really does take up a good 30% of the floor space in his room, so I brought it back out to it's corner. I suppose I could have just lef them there, kind of like an unspoken "Welcome home, and I'd like us to deal with these soon," but that seems a little passive aggressive. It's like leaving a note, but one that weighs 60 pounds and smells a little like hot dogs.
What else, what else... Oh. I've been drinking soy milk. They have it at work, and I tried it once with my Corn Flakes, and it was really tasty. So for a while I was only taking it in with flakes. But I started to branch out - coffee, tea. And now I just drink it straight. "Straight." At least I've stopped baking. I feel like if I washed down some butter cookies I made from scratch with a tall glass of soy milk, I may as well just start hanging out at highway rest areas and dressing well.
