Can't argue with that weekend. As I mentioned earlier, I was planning on heading up to Ithaca this past weekend. Head up I did, with Ben, a trombonist (tromboner? tromboneer?), and some other guy in tow. And we made it up there without incident, which is always a good thing to say about a car ride. When we started the trip, the trombone player (who for sake of brevity I'll here call Bryan) mentioned that he didn't really care what we listened to as long as it wasn't rap or techno. Which made me feel a little bad for only listening to rap and techno on the ride up, but not very. It's my car, so nyah.
First thing in Ithaca was dropping Bryan off so he could practice with the band, then straight on to Wegmans. I'd describe in exquisite gustatory detail the experience of eating this first sub, but I really don't think my limited powers of description could fully capture the event. Let us just say that it was sublime, and leave it as an unwritten chapter. After dinner, we went back to Ton's apartment to get ready.
As I may have mentioned, the party we were attending that night was the 660 Stewart Co-op annual drag ball, so it was time to get all gussied up in our finery. Ton was striking in a little schoolgirl outfit, attractive yet functional (had to be, since he was playing bass guitar for not one but
two bands that night). Ben was wearing a sun dress and a blond wig (which, when combined with the full beard he has been working on for a few weeks, made something of a creepy sight [sorry ben, but it did]. In his defense, he wasn't even
close to the creepiest looking dude there, so that's something). I wore a heavily sequined red and yellow dress from Fendi. The dress got a lot of compliments (though I don't really recall anyone saying "you look great in that" which, on reflection, is a little disappointing).
The party was a fair amount of fun. The bands were great (extra big shout-out to Bryan, who played with ADOZ for the first time after practicing with them only once and yet still rocked the house), saw some people I haven't seen in a while (not many, and they are definitely the last of the people I know in Ithaca, which is a little sad). The girl I have a crush on was wearing the same sailor suit she wore last year, which I have absolutely no complaints about. Made it easier to recognize her, actually. In fact, I was thinking about it, and I think the last time I was in Ithaca was exactly a year and three days ago, for the last 660 Stewart Drag Ball. Sampling the town at this low rate has caused a funny effect - there are now a surprisingly large number of people that I have only seen, and therefore would only recognize, in drag. And there's at least one guy who I only ever see at the end of the night; this means that I only recognize him when he's stumbling drunk and raccoon-eyed from his mascara running.
Coming back from Ithaca was a travesty. Well, maybe travesty isn't the word. It definitely snowed a lot everywhere on the east coast this weekend, and this prevented us from coming bak on Monday like we had intended. But to be honest, there are worse things than hanging around Ithaca for an extra day in a snowstorm. It really just means that I sit on couches with Ben and Ton, watch the Simpsons, and laugh a lot. In fact, having to stay an extra day was the exact opposite of a travesty (hey, that's funny. I just looked up the etymology of "travesty" on
M-W.com, and it comes from
tra- across (from Latin
trans-) +
vestire to dress. Across-dress. Huge). An extra day in Ithaca allowed us extra time to go back to Wegmans for another sub. Awesome. This, plus the sub that we picked up yesterday morning on the way back to New York (well, not 'on the way' as such since the sub shop was in the opposite direction of travel, but still) to three. As soon as I finish this, I'm going to start eating the half-sub that is currently in my bag (probably makng it really stinky).
The fun and games weren't all upstate, though. Friday night I went out to a club called South Paw to see
MC Paul Barman do his thing. It was pretty cool, and he definitely busted out the phrase "My pickle poll is as hard as a nickle roll" which I thought was pretty stinking lyric. He also did a portrait of one of the girls in the audience while singing "I'm Frickin' Awesome," which I though was frickin' awesome, as I am capable of doing neither thing.
Oh, and a note to our friend at jeanqueen666.com: I tried to send you an email thanking you for the birthday wishes, but the email got returned as undeliverable. But I know you read this, so thanks a lot!
There's a lot more stuff to talk about. But like I said, there's a whole lot of sub in my bag which I'm dying to eat, so I'm going to cut this off here. Talk to you all another day.
