Mecca: 8-26-2002

Still no apartment. Went to Union Square on Saturday, because Jeff sent me a (mass) email telling of a free preview his sketch comedy group was doing. So I went just to meet up with him and chat. It was a disaster, since he just quit his job recently and started bartending instead. Doesn't know what his finances are going to be like, so doesn't want to commit to an apartment anytime real soon, etc etc. So, here I am back at square one, looking at craigslist for shares and the voice for apartments I can afford. Which are few and far between.

I wonder if I should work at making square one less comfortable, or more comfortable. Figure, if it really sucked here, I would work all the harder to get out. But there's a possibility that I'll just remain here and be unhappy about it. And I could definitely make it better (clean my room, set up my stereo, put up my posters of famous Scandanavian sloth-herders), but I'm almost positive that's not a good idea. First of all, the posters are a little racy. But more important, I really don't want to be there, and being comfortable is a good step towards settling in. Feh.

But enough aobut that. Last Friday night, I headed out to the Roxy to go to the 2002 DMC Championship. It was a pretty good time. A whole slew of DJs, doing their thing. There were some really good cuts used. My favorite was the one fellow who used the superman theme layed over a seriously deep beat. Made me laugh a lot. Got me a free shirt (a bright orange monstrosity from HBO, which was one of the sponsers). The color matches my pajama pants, which is both good and bad. Good in that it matches my pajamas, bad in that the fact that it matches my pjs means that it is an incredibly ugly shirt.

Oh, and going sort of made me feel like a tool. I had to go straight from work ('cuz, you know, I live on LI), and so had to wear my work clothes. I knew that was going to be my plan, so I dressed down for work. Well, dressed down for work does not mean "appropriate for a turntablist competition." Felt more than a little out of place, and quite a bit older than the rest of the kids there. On the other hand, to be dressed appropriately for the thing would probably have entailed wearing some phat pants and a Mecca t-shirt. So it's for the best that I wasn't able to dress for it.

I'm kind of disappointed by this entry. Not nearly funny enough. But it's been a week, and I've got to keep up. Going to be looking at apartments this week (I hope), and I'm sure something funny will happen. Talk to you then.
