Mermaids: 6-24-2002

Another action-packed weekend for me. Or something. I cooked on Friday which is really good, since I like to eat. Cooking in my apartment is always kind of an adventure. The oven is right next to the refrigerator. I'm not sure if that's bad for the oven, bad for the fridge, or what. But the fact remains that whenever I'm making a casserole, one side of the fridge is at 50 degrees and the other is around 150. Since (as far as I can tell) Jeff has never used the oven (he's a range man), he doesn't know about this little design flaw. So I keep his things on the oven side of the fridge. Makes for a happy home.

I'm happy, anyway. And isn't that what's important?

There's also a structural piller (as opposed to a pillar that is in place for aesthetic purposes) situated immediately in front of the oven. So the oven door doesn't exactly open all the way. I mean, it definitely opens enough - I'd say I get about 75 degrees out of what should be a 90 degree door. It does mean that when I put something in there it has to get tilted and kind of slid in to the aperture. Which isn't that bad, but sometimes makes for lopsided lasagna.

And the back left burner doesn't work that well. I suppose the actual burner works fine, it's really the striker that starts the durn thing that's a little off it's feed. But I learned a little trick - since the front left burner works fine, if you turn the FL one on first, and *then* turn on the back right burner, it'll light eventually. And as a bonus, you get to see a really keen tongue of blue fire stretch from one burner to the other.

What else... Oh yeah! The Coney Island Mermaid Parade was this weekend. It was a fairly good time. In full effect was the Hungry Man Marching Band (who's webpage is down for some reason. Total disaster), a bunch of classic cars (including the ever-lovely Corvair), and a fair number of nearly naked ladies with scales and tails. A good time was had by all. Watch out for next years Alltooflat.com float (we fit right in with the whole aquatic theme. Expect it to be a well-run float, with midget and broom and all.

And finally, I do believe that I promised you all some pictures from Kaiju Big Battle at the Warsaw. A list of some of my favorites follows. I'd like to thank Ton for coming along on this life-changing experience, and letting me go ape shit with his digital camera.

  • The Evil Dr. Cube!
  • Los Plantanos, celebrating their Tag Team victory over Hell Monkey and some trash monster.
  • An aerial Uchu Chu in the process of getting dropped by Dr. Cube. Note the complete inversion!
  • Another picture of Uchu Chu getting hammered by the infamous Dr. Cube
  • Uchu getting in some of his own licks on the Cube.
  • The eternal question: Soup versus Sandwich. It's a club sandwich. Get it? Unfortunately, this bout ended with the untimely demise of Sandwich, destroyed by Soup via a toothpick to the heart. Mayonaise sprayed everywhere. It was kind of gross.
