Total Monster Mayhem: 6-8-2002
Dear God what an experience.
So, two out of three of the alltooflat squad was in Crooklyn last night, at the Kaiku Big Battle "Warsaw Wafu Fun." (Tiggz came out to NYC for a show of his on Tuesday, and is spending a couple of nights at the apartment). And so we, along with a friend of mine from Cornell (Martin Roth, who is also the other member of my band, Syndicate) and his girlfriend, went to the Warsaw in Williamsburg to watch some monster wrestling.
I was really psyched for it, but to be honest, I really don't know why. I mean, I guess I had read good things about it online from a couple of people, and the site kaiju.com made it look really good. But I was totally my level of psychitude was completely out of proportion to what I actually knew about what was going to happen. The experience completely lived up to my (completely unreasonable) expectations. It was brilliant.
First of all, this was no fly-by-night amateur wrestling operation. We're talking about a steel cage surrounding a wrestling ring. We're talking about a breakdancing potato wrapped in Aluminum foil putting a serious beatdown on a giant sea urchin. We're talking about two plantains jumping from the top of the steel cage doing a backflip onto a one-eyed monkey and a trash monster. It was incredible. A completely surreal experience.
Numerous times during the battles, the crowd would start to chant "HO-LY SHIT! HO-LY SHIT!" I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it. The only drawback to the entire thing was the really crappy band that played before the wrestling started. I heartily suggest that if you ever hear of a kaiju big battle near you (or even a long drive away) you get tickets and get there with all speed.
I took a bunch of pictures with Ton's digital camera (a bunch of action shots) that I'll post as soon as we get them downloaded to a computer.
I had to come into manhattan to get to my office so I could post this blog entry on a Saturday. I wanted to get it down before it slipped from my mind like an opium dream. Which last night was somewhat reminiscent of. Oh, and also, some girl recognized the unicursal hexagram I was wearing around my neck, which just about never happens, so that was cool too.
