Green Party: 6-3-2002
What a weekend. Still no pictures of the apartment. I went to get a digital camera on Saturday, but it didn't go so well. Actually, to be honest, I didn't go to get a digital camera; I went into a camera store to get yelled at by Israelis for not getting a digital camera and instead just wasting their time. I suppose I was one for two: I succeeded in not getting the camera (not so difficult, I just had to refrain from taking out my wallet) but the guy didn't yell at me. May have been a different Israeli camera salesman that called Ben a motherfucker.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. Friday night was so huge. An activist group based in the city called Complacent put together a party to rail against the usage of rainforest wood in the rebuilding of some subway tracks in NYC. The party started at Union Square. Just as the party was starting, the skies opened up with an electrical storm and more rain than I've seen since the floods of aught-8. People were doing poi/fire-twirling and just generally making merry with their drums and whistles. But after a little bit, the party (which numbered on the order of 200 people) moved underground, to the downtown 4 train. It was really an incredible sight to see the train station totally taken over by a huge group of people, all of whom were wearing green (as was specified in the invite email).
We waited a little while on the platform for the right train to come around (the organizers timed it out) and when we got on, the train had been decorated all in green - green tinted celophane, green streamers, etc. At every stop people would rush off the train, switch cars. Yelling, chanting, singing, drums playing, whistles blowing. People were passing around soda bottles full of green-tinted vodka, and other bottles that weren't so green but still full of alcohol. It was a serious experience. The party switched trains, and we all got off at Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn, and paraded through the roundabout to a park in the area (which itself had been all decked out in green. Luckily by then, the rain had all cleared up) and closed the party out there. It didn't run too long - met at Union Square at 8:30, and the party broke up at ~11:30 in Brooklyn. But there was a lot packed into that time. One thing I was really struck by was the minimal intrusion from police. Definitely could have gone either way, what with the army of green-suited revelers stopping traffic and holding train doors open for minutes at a time.
Anyway, I wanted to talk about that. I think you should all sign up on the Complacent email list so you too can be one of the hip activist kids making noise on the train.
And just a couple more notes - this weekend was funny 'cuz I struck out with one girl (disaster) and got the digits of some guy (not so much a disaster, but what the Hell am I going to do with that?) I way would have preferred to strike out with the guy and get the girls digits. Also, Jeff told me he's wants to move out again. But I've heard that before, so who knows? Started watching Twin Peaks for the third time: Best show that's ever been on television, Simpsons included. Oh, and I saw Unfaithful for some reason. Well, I know the reason, and it has to do with the girl I struck out with. My point is, don't bother seeing it, since not only was it not worth the money, it won't even get you play.
