So, I was out at an art party with a friend of mine, and I broke the art. It was a party at some bar in Williamsburg, put up by a group called
Interrupcion, which built a giant see-saw which not only converts physical energy into electricity, but also transforms a fun and innocent activity for children into a political statement. It perfoms this alchemical transition which a series of bike gears that result in the (dim and intermittent) turning on of a lightbulb at the fulcrum. Now, I recognize I'm being snide, and I want it to be known that I didn't break the art as my own counter statement, but rather just because I'm a schmuck. We were at a bar, I had a few grasshoppers in me (or whatever it is I'm drinking these days), and someone was like - hey, stupuid drunk guy! It's your turn!
Next thing I know, Erin was hurling forward on the seesaw, the bike handle she was using as a stabilizer having been ripped out of the plank. A swarm of artists come by and take us off the art, and I see a blowtorch come out to fix the thing. We waited about 45 minutes, but they still hadn't fixed it by that point. At this point, the best thing I can hope for is that the next time I go to one of these things, there's not a picture of my bald head next to the art, saying "Don't let this man touch." There's enough of those posted in women's bathrooms across the city already.
I realized this morning that one of the reasons I have so much of a problem with the summer is that I don't wake up until 11 on the weekends, which means that I"m getting outside at just about the hottest part of the day. Obviously, I can only deal with it for about two ohours, at which point I go back home and turn on the air conditioning. And when my housemate gets home a few hours later, when it's nice and cool out, he thinks I'm a jerkoff for sitting in the house on such a nice day.
Actually, I never turn on the AC right away. I don't like having it on, and so I'm more likely to wait in the sweltering heat until one of my friends (usually Allison) comes over and tells me that it's 100 degrees in the apartment, and only 80 degrees outside. She also tells me that it smells like boy in my apartment, and I'm not sure if that's supposed to be a good thing or a bad thing. Though, since companies that cater to the metrosexual aren't making millions helping girls look and smell like boys, it's probably not the best thing.
Finally saw Star Wars last night. I don't mean to be contrary here, but to all the people who told me that it was better than the first two: Bite my shiny metal ass. I seriously think the acting in that movie would have been better if they used actual wooden dolls. The best actor in the entire thing was Yoda, who (a) wasn't that good to begin with, and (b)
wasn't an actual actor. And maybe I was reading into it a little much, but I also thought it was poltically preachy. Whereever you stand in the political spectrum, do we really need George Lucas lecturing us on the complexities of the moral sphere conflicting with the political in what should be a Spaghetti Western in space?
There's a bunch of stuff coming out soon that I should be excited about, but I'm really not yet. Fantastic 4, which might be cool at the level of X-men or might not (like X-men 2); the new Batman movie, new Harry Potter movies. I'm all pretty meh about it. I am psyched about the Chronicles of Narnia movie, and excited to reread the books. It's been a seriously long time. I'm a little concerned about how they are going to stand up to over time, but we'll see. For some reason, I have the first book (The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe) as an audio book on my iPod right now, so I'm going to see what that's like. Don't know what it's like to curl up with a nice piece of consumer electronics, but if there's anything I like it's more time with my iPod, so I'm psyched to try it out.
