Just Don't Give a Duck: 11-19-2002

What day is today? Man, there hasn't been an update to ATF for abouut a year now. Except for the daily updates to ATFactual, which make me laugh so much. Problem is, that Collins character is making us look bad. On the upside, at least he's one of us now. By his making us look bad he is at the same time making us look better. Might as well not have hired him at all. I think I'll revoke his salary.

One of the things that has been absent from my apartment has been a coffee table for in front of the living room couch. Actually, tables of any sort have been pretty much non-existent since I've moved in. Thinking about it, since there is no counter space in my kitchen, flat surfaces of any sort are somewhat hard to find. Except the floor, which is pretty easy to find, but difficult to eat off of. Well, not difficult as such, but you get what I'm saying. I've been putting my plates on my nightstand and carrying that back and forth to the living room. Which is a little annoying, mostly because I often forget to bring it back into the bedroom and end up dropping my keys on the floor when I come home from work.

But I think I've strayed a bit from my original point. Flat surfaces. Right. So I was walking to the supermarket (again) last night, and about a block from my apartment I came across a table in the middle of the sidewalk. Figured it was a sign from a higher power. So I brought it back to my place and dumped it in my living room. I thought that was going to be a lot harder than it was, since I didn't have anyone around to help me carry it. But the design of the (incredibly ugly) table helped out quite a bit. It's a circular table resting on a circular pedestal, and the table portion of the unit rotates on its center axis. So I was able to rest the edge on the ground, hold the pedestal up to keep it from dragging, and roll it the block to my apartment.

I'll give a go at explaining what it looks like, but it kind of defies description. Like I mentioned, it's a circular table, which rises about two feet off the ground (fairly good coffee table height). The entire thing is padded, and covered (upholstered?) with some fabric: A black blackground which is mostly covered by paintbrush-like swathes of marron and deep sea-green. Ugly. But the finishing touch is the fact that the surface of the table is a mirror, about three feet in diameter. All of this, and it matches my dishes. Awesome. I expect it to last until Sam moves in.

So, tonight is the Leonid meteor shower; this is supposed to be the greatest meteor shower in years, and we won't see the like until 2099. I figure the only way I'm going to see a meteor while inside any of the five boros is if it actually lands next to me. We have different types of star-gazing around here anyway. In fact, the past 24 hours have been surprisingly full of star-spotting for me. This morning on way walk to work, I saw Tyra Banks and who I think was Natasha Henstridge in Santas sleigh. And I'm pretty sure that I walked past Julia Roberts yesterday as she was taking her dog for a walk. The dog was urinating on the sidewalk at the time, and it's unfortunate but now that image is going to be inextricably tied to her name in my head. "America's Sweethearts? Yeah, that's that movie with the dog-pee girl, right?"
