Last night was my first night in the new bed. And it was glorious. Sleeping on a bed is so much better than not sleeping on a bed; this is probably the reason people have taken to doing it so often. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever heard or heard of someone saying "I'm hitting the sack. And by sack I mean floor, because I could use a change from the whole 'bed' paradigm I've been working with recently." Of course, if I
did hear someone say that, I might have to punch them in the eye for using the word 'paradigm' in casual conversation. It's a word that belongs on a bumper sticker along with 'dominant' and 'subvert' (so others can read it and think to themselves "Yeah, way to be subverting the dominant paradigm whilst driving that Accord, jackass").
In any case, I slept like a baby. Well, not exactly like a baby, since they tend towards colic and wetting the sheets which I have so far been successful in avoiding. I had brought some of my pillows from LI last week, so right now my room is nearly complete (I'm waiting only for the moveable closet space that the landlord said he was going to bring by on Wednesday. Now, it's become a waiting game. I fully expect him to blink first). One of the bookcases I bought is up and full of books (and other stuff, like my
EA-1,
ER-1, and miniature of Zoid the Barbarian Pinhead). The other is in the kitchen, doing a yeomans job as a kitchen counter. I don't know if it's going to remain there, but it does the job for now. I'm thinking about treating the top shelf with something. Olive oil, or something else that will allow for easy cleaning and yet not poison me if I put my cucumbers thereon.
Have I mentioned my plates? I have some incredibly awesome dishware (courtesy of my brother and sister-in-law needing everything in their kitchem to match. Which is funny, because with the amount they work they seldomly enter the kitchen at all, much less have the time to admire how together their space is). Bowls, plates, saucers, coffee cups, all black with little green dots around the edges. I made myself a salad last night, and the green of the lettuce looked
so good against the black of the dishes, I actually wept from the beauty of it all. Well, not so much wept as ate the salad. But I was moved. The best part is that I have wine glasses with black stems to match the dishes. Now if I only had some utensils so I didn't have to eat with my hands, I'd be set.
I spent a few minutes last night making an arrangement of one of the plates, one of the wine glasses, and Brunos bottle of wine (that I still haven't gotten around to drinking) on the kitchen bookcase/counter. The raw wood of the bookcase and the stark black of the items had two interesting effects. First, it made the kitchen look rustic with a hint of 20th century (It'd say 21st century, but the 21st belongs to Ikea). Second, it made me want to call one of my friends and have him beat me up for spending time making arrangements of plates in my kitchen.
One of the things that's so exciting about the whole new apartment thing is that I'm learning all about the idiosyncracies of the place. A few nights ago, I was walking around the apartment in my bare feet. The floors are hardwood, recently redone (look very nice, are completely devoid of splinters, etc). I found the spot in my living room that is directly above the boiler. Yesterday morning it was a little chilly, so I stopped there for a second on my way to the shower. It's nice and toasty warm. I also found that a spot on the floor right outside of my room (and a bit off to the right) is a little squeaky. Knowing that made it feel a little more like home.
There's a strict "no pets" policy in the apartment, but I kind of want to get a bird. It's not a real pet, right? Anyway, if I were going to get a bird, I would get a raven. I know, I know, it's not the easiest bird to take care of, and who gets a raven? I don't wear enough black leather to make it believable. It's not even a pet bird, generally speaking. But I really want one, and I want to call him Quoth. It'd be perfect. He'd match the plates.
