Enochian Verse: 10-7-2002

Man, more things to talk about than I can shake a stick at. And yet I can't remember a single one of them. We'll start with last week. One day last week (possibly Thursday, potentially Wednesday) I left my cell phone in its cradle when I left for work. It was, quite possibly, the worst day I've had in months. Forget the facts that getting together with the kids I was going to a comedy show with was a travesty, that I made more outgoing phone calls to my own number (to check my messages) in that one day than I've made to vendors and tech support for my entire tenure at CUNY. Forget that I missed meeting with Ed Clapp that morning even though I was only down the hall (wearing a EEG headpiece which would have made him laugh a lot) while he waited outside my room. But walking around the streets of new york without my cell phone made me feel like Lady Godiva without the hair for covering. Maybe more like a gunslinger who had something pilfered from his holster; there was a conspicuous absence of weight from my side, and it made me really uncomfortable. On the upside, at least there is no way I'm ever going to leave without the thing again.

I'm almost entirely done wit h ripping my cd collection. I have two more Wu-Tang albums to get through, and then I'm finished. With just around 4 gigs to spare. A fairly nice space to grow into, I think. Once I'm done with that album, I'm going to go through and cull a few things out. I really don't think I need 12 recordings of Aliester Crowley doing High Magic rituals in Enochian (actually only 4 in Enochian, 4 English translations, and 4 poems). I'm glad I have it on CD, but I don't think there will ever come a time I'm going to be psyched that it came up on shuffle. Of course, I feel the same way about most of the Depeche Mode I have, so there's clearly some sort of double standard going on.

This was a pretty full weekend, I seem to recall. Again, I'm having trouble remembering what was going on on Friday... Oh, right I remember. It's none of your business. Saturday was a good day; spent most of the day with Horseradish Tree making more content for Alltooflat. Expect it to come up sometime at the end of the week. Both Ben and Ton have been doing some great work with ATF administration things (which make no difference to you, but are really nice to see on this side of the server/client relationship). By way of contrast, I have spent hours of time scheduled for ATF programming attempting to decide which color sheets will go best with my purple-walled room. Actually, it's not purple. It's "Arabian Night." I'm not very good with this sort of thing, so I'm not really the right person to have an opinion about it. But there is some possibility that it's a horrendous color to have a room. I like it, but like I said I'm no Martha Stewart. In fact, I'm barely Rip Taylor.

Yesterday was a day for playing with computer hardware. My mother has been complaining that the computer she is using (which is my brothers old computer, a P-133 from '97 or thereabouts) is too slow (which is an awesome thing to hear from ones mother), the printer doesn't work, etc. So I tried to fix it up a little bit for her - got her a new laser printer (which is SO fast), getting her a new monitor this week, and switched that computer with my old P-120 from college. Now, I recognize that 133 > 120, but I have been under the impression that the 120 actually ran faster than the 133 for some reason or another. Not surprisingly, it turns out I was wrong, and so I'm going to switch it back this evening. But I mention it because last night, when my mother was trying out her new set-up, she called me in to discuss banner ads. She was specifically concerned about the ones that look exactly like a windows system message, complete with the 3D button, telling her to "Scan for Viruses Now?" She gets caught by that one everytime. In trying to explain why she shouldn't click the link, I found myself getting really angry about things like that. The web is the only place I can think of where deceptive and abusive business practices are the norm. Well, I suppose that's not true at all. But at least it's the only place I can think of where those traits are practiced in clear view of everyone online. At least 'real' businesses do their deception under cover of reams of accounts sheets.
