The flood cometh (cameth?): 9-9-2002

This might be an entirely meta-blog entry, so my apologies for that. But I have to say, it's been quite a week for alltooflat news, and I just have to get it out somewhere. And ATF is like my second home, so it's almost like I'm writing about my living situation (is that a stretch?). In any case, we're all just going to have to deal with it, since I'm my own editor.

It all started with the newscientist.com article on elgoog being a way around the Great Firewall of China. This was news to us, and we were pretty psyched about it (newscientist being a fairly respectable online news source, and China being a very big nation to be thumbing our nose at). And our hit jumped pretty high when that happened, and we were laughing a lot all through last week while the article was running.

After a night of somewhat subdued debauchery this past Saturday (including my first Mojito ever, and second viewing ever of a drag show, both at Stingy Lulu's on Ave B), I was woken on Sunday morning by a call from Ton with some great news. ATF had been slashdotted! Now, for those that don't know (and I found that most of my friends, barring those that work on the site with me, don't), Slashdot is a really really really popular news collector online (people submit important/interesting news tidbits found other places online, and they get reposted/linked to/commented on), which gets SO MANY hits every day. It's definitely been one of the goals of ATF to get a link on slashdot, and now we have. The result of this is that our hits have skyrocketed ever since the article was posted. Now this is huge, since it means that a lot of people are reading alltooflat all of a sudden (55.3 thousand on Sunday, and an estimated 77.6 thousand today). It's not so huge in that we are burning SO MUCH bandwidth. We exceeded our monthly bandwidth allocation and then some. It's the price we pay for fame, I suppose. Far be it from me to complain.

Ben questioned last night if this new-found success was going to be our 15 minutes of fame, and he sounded somewhat concerned about it. I reminded him that it was pretty funny that we've asked ourselves that question multiple times in the life of the site, most recently when we had a 15k-hit day. I've decided that those who only have 15 minutes of fame just aren't trying hard enough to be funny.

I had some other things to say, but I've forgotten them (having taken my lunch break in the middle of blog writing). So I'll leave you with that. Again, big salutations to all the ATF new comers. Hope you all keep checking the site. Oh, and giving us money. Donate to us via Paypal, buy ATF merchandise, send your coin purses to us - every little bit helps.

Sucks that the first blog entry I write after the flood of visitors is really not funny at all. Sorry about that.
