Dr. Doom, Magneto Urge Patience in Standoff Between United States, Galactus
NEW YORK - The contentious UN debate over the proper response to the appearance of
Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds, in Earth's solar system continued today as the rulers of
Latveria and
Genosha made clear their intentions to veto any Security Council resolution that authorized the United States or its agents (namely
the Fantastic Four and
the Avengers) to use force in an attempt to prevent Galactus from turning the planet into a lifeless floating husk.
Despite feverish
diplomacy on the part of the U.S.,
Dr. Doom, Supreme Ruler of the tiny European nation Latveria, and
Magneto, President-for-Life of the island stronghold Genosha, formed a
two-nation "coalition of peace" which repeated their assertion that Galactus posed no imminent threat to the world community. Moreover, they pointed out that U.S. Secretary of
S.H.I.E.L.D. Nick Fury had yet to "convincingly make the case" for links between Galactus and terrorist groups like
A.I.M.,
H.Y.D.R.A., and the
Brotherhood of Mutants, and stated that recent tests by the Fantastic Four's Reed Richards of the new
Ultimate Nullifier superweapon were a "needless provocation."
Latverian representatives insisted this position was unrelated to Galactus's promise that Dr. Doom would be appointed ruler of any and all humans who survived any Earth-eating activities. Similarly, the Genoshan ambassador characterized Galactus's promise that Magneto would be named Emperor of All Mutants in the wake of Earth's destruction "categorically unrelated" to the official pro-peace position of the nation's leadership.
